West Nile Virus
As of June 25, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had confirmed human cases in at least seven states: Arizona, Arkansas, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi and Tennessee. At least 18 states have detected the virus this year in humans, mosquitoes, birds or other animals.
As of August 16, 2024, 13 human cases in California have tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV) 24, with two WNV related fatalities reported.
In Las Vegas, a record number of mosquitoes are carrying WNV.
Harvard Medical School's Louise Ivers says that situations like this will become more common as climate change continues to increase infectious diseases globally.
