In July 2024, health officials confirmed a few cases of dengue fever in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. The CDC issued a nationwide health advisory about the disease just days before the cases were confirmed.
Columbus County
In August 2024, three cases of West Nile virus were confirmed in Columbus County, North Carolina. The patients were hospitalized but survived. The most common time of year to get West Nile virus from a mosquito bite is late summer to early fall.
Wilmington
In August 2024, mosquitoes swarmed Wilmington, North Carolina after Tropical Storm Debby. The head of New Hanover County's mosquito control program said the mosquitoes were coming from Eagles Island across from downtown Wilmington.
